Most Anticipated NA Reads | September 2017

So, in the month of August, I’ve read one book and three individual issues of Saga. If it’s not too obvious yet – my friend, indeed I am in a slump. But what do you do when you’re afflicted with this slump flu like mine? You don’t just sit around and wait for it to go away. You drag your ass off and make a list of the books you’re going to conquer because your slump ain’t gonna cure itself.

Anyway, enough of the dramatic intro. I actually just wanna make a list of the New Adult titles I wanna read in the month of September because 1.) I’m a self-confessed new adult/romance lover; 2.) reading new adult is such a breeze for me, so if I wanna catch up with my reading goal this year, I need me  lots of NAs!; and 3.) I’ve been missing a lot of old and new releases in this genre and I need to be updated stat!

Series Review: The Off-Campus Series by Elle Kennedy

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-12-51-13-pm

The Off-Campus series is composed of four books – The Deal, The Mistake, The Score, and the yet unpublished The Goal. It revolves around the lives of hockey player-friends Garrett, Logan, Dean, and Tucker.

P.S. Never (ever!) judge books by their covers! Ha ha!

She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…
Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

…and it’s going to be oh so good

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

Let me start off by saying that The Deal sealed it all for me! After finishing this first installment, I knew I need to get into the rest of the series and I knew that whatever Elle Kennedy is publishing, I would get and read it. Hannah and Garrett’s story is probably the one closest to my heart. Hannah is perfect, very likeable and very smart. She’s a no-non sense person, practical, down to earth, I could go on and on saying all these positive things about her. Oh and she’s also very smart! I feel like I totally related to her because of how she’s willing to go great lengths for her crush (not Garrett, but some football guy!). Me loves my crushes too! Ha ha! Anyway, I just liked how likeable Hannah is, because with the boom of New Adult it now kinda rare to find a female lead who isn’t annoying and totally relatable.

Now Garrett. What can I say about this personification of perfection? At the beginning of the story, Garrett is almost flunking one of his subjects and he’s trapped in this dilemma. No, he’s not your typical I-don’t-study-beacuse-I-am-a-hockey-varsity kinda guy. In fact, he is acing all his subjects except for one (Philosophy! Which is totally acceptable, right?!) So he seeks the help of Hannah (because she’s acing it!) and the rest is history. 🙂 What I like most about Garrett is his sense of responsibility. He’s the captain of the team and he’ll do anything – anything! – for them. I think Garrett is the most mature out of all the guys in series and I just love how he’s got that balance of being the cool and hot guy while being the studious and responsible team captain. Again, my words escape me, but please know that The Deal is probably one of the best New Adult romances out there!

5/5!

College junior John Logan can get any girl he wants. For this hockey star, life is a parade of parties and hook-ups, but behind his killer grins and easygoing charm, he hides growing despair about the dead-end road he’ll be forced to walk after graduation. A sexy encounter with freshman Grace Ivers is just the distraction he needs, but when a thoughtless mistake pushes her away, Logan plans to spend his final year proving to her that he’s worth a second chance.

Now he’s going to need to up his game…

After a less than stellar freshman year, Grace is back at Briar University, older, wiser, and so over the arrogant hockey player she nearly handed her V-card to. She’s not a charity case, and she’s not the quiet butterfly she was when they first hooked up. If Logan expects her to roll over and beg like all his other puck bunnies, he can think again. He wants her back? He’ll have to work for it. This time around, she’ll be the one in the driver’s seat…and she plans on driving him wild.

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-12-58-45-pm

The Mistake is Logan’s story – one of Garrett’s best friends. Honestly, this one is probably my least favorite in the series. It started with Logan thinking that he has feelings for Hannah (yeap, Garrett’s girlfriend!) and I was feeling so off about it since then. It was probably only after the first quarter of the book that Logan stopped thinking about her and diverted his attention to Grace. Don’t get me wrong, Logan is not a villain and he’s certainly not a bad person! Logan is very very charming himself. He’s got lots of family issues and responsibilities and the way he deals with them would just make you wanna fall for him.

Grace, on the other hand though, is probably the least likeable female character in the series. I wasn’t able to connect much with her because I thought she was too plain and doesn’t have a voice of her own. Plain is cool, don’t get me wrong, I am a plain Jane myself – but Grace was easily forgettable 😦 I also found her kind of annoying and entitled? I dunno man, some of you might find her charming and innocent and it would be cool and perfect. Guess she just didn’t work out for me.

3.5/5!

He knows how to score, on and off the ice

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she’s going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-12-58-45-pm

Oh boy, where do I even begin with this one? Dean Heyward-Di Laurentis. Just with his name, I was already sold. ie, hotel owners, business moguls from Manhattan!)  and he’s pretty much had and a problem free and perfect life since forever. Relationships are a no-no for him because of all the drama they entail – until he meets Allie.

Allie Hayes just broke up with her long time boyfriend. She’s the kind of girl who’s into long term relationships, romantic what-nots, and a believer of true and forever-lasting love. She’s a relationship kind of person and so hooking up with Dean Di Laurentis – the god of one night stands – is the last thing in her mind. I totally totally love Allie. She’s a girl who knows what she wants and does it! She’s so independent yet so vulnerable and I just totally related to her. Allie is super comparable with Hannah in the first book, if not better! I also love how this book showed how family oriented she is and how she’d do everything for her dad.

Oh and can I just say that every scene where Dean teaches public school kids hockey is just plain adorable and heart warming! I swooned every single time!

4.5/5!

She’s good at achieving her goals…
College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist

The Goal is Tucker’s story and is to be released on September 26th 2016! Can’t wait to read and review it because of how The Score ended! It was such a good good cliff hanger!

So that’s it, guys! I hope you liked my mini review of each book in the series 🙂 The Off-Campus series is definitely one of the best New Adult series out there! 🙂 Totally recommend it!

Author Review: Penelope Ward

So I have been in a real good New Adult streak the past couple of weeks and what can I say? I. am. having. a. BLAST! I have been discovering a lot of old and new NA authors and despite the tropes and the same as usual plot twists that’s happening to everybody and their mother, I am surprisingly having a really good time reading them! And with the rate I’m going, I’m not sure if I’d have the time to review them individually so I decided to just do some sort of a quick author review, if that makes sense?

I have read two of Penelope Ward’s books in probably under 4 days (I am a slow reader, I know!) and the reviews couldn’t be any more different!

Sharing a summer house with a hot-as-hell roommate should be a dream come true, right?
Not when it’s Justin…the only person I’d ever loved…who now hates me.
When my grandmother died and left me half of the house on Aquidneck Island, there was a catch: the other half would go to the boy she helped raise.
The same boy who turned into the teenager whose heart I broke years ago.
The same teenager who’s now a man with a hard body and a hardass personality to match.
I hadn’t seen him in years, and now we’re living together because neither one of us is willing to give up the house.

The worst part? He didn’t come alone.

I’d soon realize there’s a thin line between love and hate. I could see through that smug smile. Beneath it all…the boy is still there. So is our connection.

The problem is…now that I can’t have Justin, I’ve never wanted him more

4 Stars

I am giving RoomHate 3.5 stars ‘coz I really kinda liked it! I mean, I’ve seen better ones, but this one is unique and sweet and sexy in its own way!

I admit it kinda started a little off for me (If you’re reading this right now and are feeling the same thing at the beginning, read on and get through the first quarter of the book! I promise it would get so much better!) Things began kinda slow and Amelia was just being apologetic for every single thing she does and I kinda hated it, honestly. On the other hand, Justin Banks, the hottie that he is, was just being plain DB at the beginning. So yeah. It wasn’t a good start at all and I was ready to DNF at 10%.

But then I kinda persevered some more and surprisingly things got really better. And I mean, really better! ❤ The thing I liked most with RoomHate is the character development of both Amelia and Justin. I love it when the characters would (a little not-so spoiler here!) grow apart for a period of time (like for a year or two) and then they’d see each other again and…you know the drill here, guys. So yeah, I liked the more mature Amelia and Justin in the second half of the story and things just got really good from then on. 🙂

I’d recommend this if you’re someone who likes childhood-friends-turned-lovers kind of stories, or if you’re into angsty characters because believe me, the angst in this book was way taller than Michael Jordan. Wait, where did that MJ comparison came from?

Anyway, it was a very pleasant surprise that I kinda liked how things turned out in this! Again, it started a little off but things kinda got okaaaay and soooo gooood! And Justine Banks was such a darling!

Nina Kennedy was alive…but not living…until she met him.

Planes, trains, heights…you name it, Nina was afraid of it and led a sheltered life ruled by irrational fears and phobias. When she moves to Brooklyn for nursing school, that life is turned upside down, as she develops an intense but unwanted attraction to her gorgeous roommate, who’s pierced, tattooed and just happens to be the smartest person she’s ever met.

Behind Jake Green’s rough exterior and devilish smile, lies a heart of gold. He makes it his mission to change Nina’s outlook on life. When he agrees to tutor her, they forge a bet and the stakes are high as Jake forces Nina to face her demons. He just wasn’t expecting to fall hard for her in the process.

What Nina doesn’t realize, is that Jake has been living his own private hell. Once he drops a bombshell, will their love survive it?

Told in two parts from both Nina and Jake’s points of view, Jake Undone is a standalone story and a companion to the novel, Gemini.

3 Stars

2.5 stars for this one! As much as I would like to love it, there are just some parts that I was really confused about. I mean, it wasn’t bad, it’s just very…forgettable. 😦

It was something in between “I liked it” and “It was ok.” I’ve been really thinking about my rating for this one because there are things I really liked about it but there are also things that are kinda meh for me.

It started out with Nina being afraid of a lot of things – like riding trains, taking the elevator, all those kinda stuff – and Jake, her new roommate, made it a point to help her get over each of her fears and falling for her in the process. It was a roommates turned lovers kind of story, you see.  The premise was cute and it wasn’t shallow at all. Both Nina and Jake have pasts you wouldn’t expect them to have, especially Jake.

However, I just found things to be all over the place and I thought there were just too many things happening at the same time? I dunno. I think I might be the odd one out here because everybody in Goodreads is loving it and even giving it 10 out 5! Man, I wish I loved it more. I tried, I swear.

P.S. The ending with Ivy, though, (you have to read it to know who Ivy is! Spoiler if I say who she is!) still doesn’t sit well for me. I still feel a little off about it so I guess it’s a huge factor why I didn’t like the book over all. Then again it was just me. If the rest of Goodreads loved Jake, Undone, you should prolly still check it out and see for yourself! 🙂

Anyway, that’s it guys! 2 of Penelope Ward’s books that I’ve read during the past week! I am looking forward to discover more new and old NA writers because they are a breeze to read, and just aren’t complicated at all! Ha! Perfect during study breaks! 🙂

I’ll see you next post, and as always – happy reading!

BOOK REVIEW: NEVER NEVER PART 2

Book Review

This book, guys, THIS BOOK!!! I am having so many feelings right now I can’t even deal with the awesomeness of Colleen and Taryn! I mean, they aren’t humans. They’re gods of the writing world! Aaaaah. So good! Such a great great team up! I can’t! I just can’t!

Okaaay. So enough of fangirling. I am not sure if I can write a legit review for this book ‘coz I might spoil you guys, and I just don’t want to do it to anyone!

Quick Stats

Title: Never Never Part 2

Author: Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher

Date Published: May 17th 2015

Series: Second book of the Never Never novellas

My book format: Kindle version

Goodreads blurb:

“Never forget that I was your first real kiss. Never forget that you’ll be my last.

And never stop loving me between all of them.

Never stop, Charlie.

Never forget.”

Silas races against time as more truths unravel, while others twist tighter together. And now, the stakes are higher as Silas’ control slips and others begin to point fingers. Charlie is in trouble and he must be the one to bridge the chasm between their past and their present. Because somewhere between I love yous and Never Nevers and Never Agains, a truth they can’t imagine, beckons to be found.

“Where are you, Charlie?”

My thoughts

Okay. If you have not read the first book, then I suggest you don’t continue reading this “review” ‘coz you might just get spoiled and this book is not something you really would want to get spoiled on. So, yeah. Bye for now if you haven’t read Part 1 🙂

So…okay. I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELS RIGHT NOW!  Somebody please stop me from falling in love with Silas! Please!

So like I said, I am quite certain that I won’t be able to come up with a legit review for this book because how can you review something you still don’t know anything about, right? Yeah, yeah, I have read it, but practically speaking, I still don’t know what is happening either! It’s like, I am one with Silas and Charlie in their confusion and in their search for the answer.

One of my book buddies in my book club, Camilla, actually had a very smart idea as to why Colleen and Tarryn keep on doing all these cliffhangers. Cam said maybe they wanted us, readers, to feel what Silas and Charlie are actually feeling. Like, they’d release one part, and have the next part released after a couple of months just to make us all forget what has happened in the first part! And that is exactly what Charlie and Silas are going through! I mean, ahhh, that was such a smart realization! So when Charlie’s sister, Janette, came out in the scenes, we the readers were like, “Hey, who’s Janette again?” — the exact same way Silas reacted when he was talking to Janette for the first time (again). Do you get it, you guys?! I know you do! Haha. (Really smart realization, Cam, I totally agree with you in this! Haha)

At first, everything felt like the first book. I kept on asking, I kept on suggesting what could have been the condition they really are in — is it scientific? I mean, can it be cured by science? By medicine? Or is it something paranormal? Or will this turn out to be a fantasy? Will the twist be like, some kind of supernatural power has been controlling them? I REALLY DON’T KNOW AND I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANNA KNOW NOW WHAT IS GOING ON! PLEAAASE COLLEEN AND TARRYN! PLEAAASE.

Oh, my fave part is definitely the last chapter, where Silas and Charlie were doing the countdown to the very second they’d lose all their memories again! OH MY GOD THAT SCENE. I WAS FEELING SO NERVOUS WHEN I WAS READING IT, LIKE I WAS THERE WITH THEM, TOO! Oooh, this book! So so so good!

I don’t despise the cliffhangers at all, unlike a lot of people that I know of. Weird as it may sound, I like the cliffhangers in this particular novel coz it adds to the mystery even more! Ahh, it was just so awesome. SO AWESOME.

The Boklander Rating

4 Stars

I am giving it a 4.5 never never ending stars! Can’t wait for the third part! 🙂

So that’s it, guys! I’ll see ya next post and happy reading always! 🙂
