Book Review: The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin

The Thing About Jellyfish is my book club’s book of the month last December. I wasn’t able to get into it though, but I made it a point to make it one of my priority reads in January, and I am just so glad that I did. I had the PERFECT first book of the year! This is middle grade and I honestly didn’t set my expectation too high. But boy. It was good. Really really good.

Book Review: Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Book Review

I never thought I would love this book soooo soooo much! It’s been a while since I’ve stumbled upon a YA contemporary that made me smile and fall in love and hurt and feel all the feels all at the same time. Since You’ve Been Gone is definitely one of the best YA contemporaries I have read in 2015.

Quick Stats

Title: Since You’ve Been Gone

Author: Morgan Matson

Date of Publication: May 6th 2014

Read from: May 21st to June 7th, 2015

My book format: Paperback, published by Simon & Schuster

Goodreads blurb:

It was Sloane who yanked Emily out of her shell and made life 100% interesting. But right before what should have been the most epic summer, Sloane just…disappears. All she leaves behind is a to-do list.

On it, thirteen Sloane-inspired tasks that Emily would normally never try. But what if they could bring her best friend back?

Apple picking at night? Okay, easy enough.

Dance until dawn? Sure. Why not?

Kiss a stranger? Um…

Emily now has this unexpected summer, and the help of Frank Porter (totally unexpected), to check things off Sloane’s list. Who knows what she’ll find?

Go skinny-dipping? Wait…what?

 My thoughts

Where do I start, though, coz I have a lot to say about this book. ❤ ❤ ❤

This is my first ever Morgan Matson read and I am glad it is, because now I am so pumped to read Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour and Second Chance Summer. ❤ ❤ ❤ It’s not in my immediate TBR, actually, but my little book club has chosen it as our book for the month of MAY (we needed a green book!) so yeah. 🙂 Looking back now, I’m really really glad we picked it.

Anyway, at first, I didn’t think I would like this book. To be honest, the hype made me feel just meh about. I was expecting it wouldn’t be for me, coz you know, I wasn’t in high school anymore and I really don’t think I’d relate well to the character. BUT BOY WAS I WRONG!

It was soooo good. Morgan Matson, hands down!

The characters were the best part of this book. I mean, yeah, the plot is unique and everything, but the character development! Ahhh!! It’s all so fleshed out, and so intricate. Like, every single one of the character grew and developed, not just Emily. ❤

I really loved how Emily’s character developed so greatly. I mean, yeah, at first she’s like super dependent on Sloane and it’s like she can’t do anything without her. I know some of my book friends got really annoyed with this personality, but I think it’s natural for a high school student to be such – especially when you have always been the shadow of your friend, then once she’s gone, you can’t find where you’ll cling to 😦 Anyway, so that was Emily before. And I loved how she realized towards the end that she’d been doing the list not for Sloane anymore, but more for herself. ❤

I also loved the rest of the characters! Frank Porter was adorable. Your typical student council president, staright A guy who wants to save the turtles and the rest of the environment. But deep down, he’s just a guy who has weaknesses too, like running 🙂 I am so invested in Frank’s character that when he left Em after their kiss (and didn’t text nor showed up for a week) I was already starting to get disappointed in him! Ha! But I knew he’d be back. And knew he’s break up with Lissa. 🙂 ❤ ❤ ❤ Oh, Frank, just so perfect 🙂

I also loved Dawn and Collins! Expecially Collins!!! ❤ He is your typical funny friend who is so self absorbed but in such a good good way. Like, he shows he knows he’s a catch for all the girls in the world and all but deep in a lot of insecurities are boiling up. AND OH, my fave Collins moment was when he really got to be honest that he didn’t want his best friend get stolen from him. Sigh. That was the best Collins moment for me – so raw and so emotional! Dawn was cute, too, and she’s a really cool friend. I just didn’t like how she just dismissed Em after the latter told her about the kiss 😦 It’s like she left her hanging in the air without anyone 😦 I mean, yeah, she hates cheaters and all but Emily is her freaking friend who was there for her when here boyfriend cheated on her and she’ll just leave her without no one?! I mean come on, Dawn, I thought you were better than that! I hope they become friends again, though, ‘coz there really was no resolution in the ending about them 🙂

So I guess that’s about everything. This book is so character driven and I loved loved loved every bit of it 🙂 Oh, I especially loved the skinny dipping part! It was so cute and Em was just staring all the time! Haha. I loved it!

Book Review

This book, guys, THIS BOOK!!! I am having so many feelings right now I can’t even deal with the awesomeness of Colleen and Taryn! I mean, they aren’t humans. They’re gods of the writing world! Aaaaah. So good! Such a great great team up! I can’t! I just can’t!

Okaaay. So enough of fangirling. I am not sure if I can write a legit review for this book ‘coz I might spoil you guys, and I just don’t want to do it to anyone!

Quick Stats

Title: Never Never Part 2

Author: Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher

Date Published: May 17th 2015

Series: Second book of the Never Never novellas

My book format: Kindle version

Goodreads blurb:

“Never forget that I was your first real kiss. Never forget that you’ll be my last.

And never stop loving me between all of them.

Never stop, Charlie.

Never forget.”

Silas races against time as more truths unravel, while others twist tighter together. And now, the stakes are higher as Silas’ control slips and others begin to point fingers. Charlie is in trouble and he must be the one to bridge the chasm between their past and their present. Because somewhere between I love yous and Never Nevers and Never Agains, a truth they can’t imagine, beckons to be found.

“Where are you, Charlie?”

My thoughts

Okay. If you have not read the first book, then I suggest you don’t continue reading this “review” ‘coz you might just get spoiled and this book is not something you really would want to get spoiled on. So, yeah. Bye for now if you haven’t read Part 1 🙂

So…okay. I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELS RIGHT NOW!  Somebody please stop me from falling in love with Silas! Please!

So like I said, I am quite certain that I won’t be able to come up with a legit review for this book because how can you review something you still don’t know anything about, right? Yeah, yeah, I have read it, but practically speaking, I still don’t know what is happening either! It’s like, I am one with Silas and Charlie in their confusion and in their search for the answer.

One of my book buddies in my book club, Camilla, actually had a very smart idea as to why Colleen and Tarryn keep on doing all these cliffhangers. Cam said maybe they wanted us, readers, to feel what Silas and Charlie are actually feeling. Like, they’d release one part, and have the next part released after a couple of months just to make us all forget what has happened in the first part! And that is exactly what Charlie and Silas are going through! I mean, ahhh, that was such a smart realization! So when Charlie’s sister, Janette, came out in the scenes, we the readers were like, “Hey, who’s Janette again?” — the exact same way Silas reacted when he was talking to Janette for the first time (again). Do you get it, you guys?! I know you do! Haha. (Really smart realization, Cam, I totally agree with you in this! Haha)

At first, everything felt like the first book. I kept on asking, I kept on suggesting what could have been the condition they really are in — is it scientific? I mean, can it be cured by science? By medicine? Or is it something paranormal? Or will this turn out to be a fantasy? Will the twist be like, some kind of supernatural power has been controlling them? I REALLY DON’T KNOW AND I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANNA KNOW NOW WHAT IS GOING ON! PLEAAASE COLLEEN AND TARRYN! PLEAAASE.

Oh, my fave part is definitely the last chapter, where Silas and Charlie were doing the countdown to the very second they’d lose all their memories again! OH MY GOD THAT SCENE. I WAS FEELING SO NERVOUS WHEN I WAS READING IT, LIKE I WAS THERE WITH THEM, TOO! Oooh, this book! So so so good!

I don’t despise the cliffhangers at all, unlike a lot of people that I know of. Weird as it may sound, I like the cliffhangers in this particular novel coz it adds to the mystery even more! Ahh, it was just so awesome. SO AWESOME.
