WELL. WHAT CAN I SAY.
I am left speechless because MARIE LU HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!
Let me preface this review by saying that if you’ve been a follower of this blog since day one, you’d know that the very first review I’ve published is that of Legend’s, and that series is definitely one of the reasons why I started reading more YAs. Oh god, where do I even with this one?
“For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
There are just so many things I want to say about Warcross, but I doubt this post would perfectly encapsulate all my feels for this book. It’s awesome, it’s awesome, it’s awesome! And I would book-push it to anybody in the world. Read it, I beg you!
Initial reaction. I will admit that at first, I was quite a bit iffy about Marie Lu writing something about gaming and hacking, which aren’t at all my stuff, hence, I wasn’t so thrilled about the whole concept. And if I’d be quite more honest, the cover wasn’t just right for me when I saw it during the cover reveal. So, to cut it short, I wasn’t expecting so much from Warcross.
But boy, oh boy. NOW PLEASE TELL ME, WHY I EVER DID DOUBT MARIE LU WITH THIS ONE?! I knew from the very beginning that writing style-wise, I’m gonna have no problem at all because I loved Legend and for the longest time, I LIVED for Legend. And I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this at this point already, but it looks like I AM SO LIVING FOR WARCROSS RIGHT NOW. I mean. Come on, if you are a true lover of YA sci-fi, this better be in your list because it is way beyond perfect.
God, that world building. Totally not a gamer here, but Warcross made me wanna be one. Or at least be involved in something that has virtual reality in it. Basically, and as you would infer from the back summary, Warcross is a virtual reality game that lets players access the other world by wearing the NeuroLink, a pair of glasses that lets you switch between virtual reality and the real world. Each world, though, is different for every game or session if you must say, and the intricacy of each one and how Marie Lu depicted them is just way beyond me. She is queen.
Emika is just the perfect protag. The main protagonist here is Emika Chen, who basically is a nobody in the world of Warcross. She’s never been in the leaderboards nor in the world’s greatest list. She has one really great talent, though, and a talent that the creator of Warcross himself needs – Emika is a HACKER. Did I mention that Emika is the coolest? Then okay I’m saying it again – EMIKA CHEN IS JUST THE COOLEST PROTAG THERE EVER WAS.
Hideo Tanaka. Need I say more? So, I admit I’ve never fangirl-ed this bad for the quite a while now, until OHMYHOTNESSGOD Hideo Tanaka. Don’t get me started on this genius of a man because you know I will never stop. Not really, alright, because I will stop now before I say anything spoilery. Just please, please, tell me what your thoughts about Hideo are, I wanna know and I wanna someone to fangirl with!
Anyway, I guess this whole review will end with me saying that indeed, Marie Lu has done it again. It was just so good. One twist after another, you’ll go crazy I swear but in a good good way. Yes, it’s going to keep you on the edge of your seat. You would want to finish it right away, but you’d also hate finishing it at the same time because then you would nothing awesome to read anymore. I know you get what I mean.
Definitely 5 perfect stars for Warcross! I can’t wait for the next book, please. I just want it so bad right now!
Other reviews for this awesome awesome masterpiece are posted in the following blogs and I would it if you’d also check them out!
