Goodreads blurb:

At the dawn of time, there were 13 Houses in the Zodiac Galaxy. Now only 12 remain….

Rhoma Grace is a 16-year-old student from House Cancer with an unusual way of reading the stars. While her classmates use measurements to make accurate astrological predictions, Rho can’t solve for ‘x’ to save her life—so instead, she looks up at the night sky and makes up stories.

When a violent blast strikes the moons of Cancer, sending its ocean planet off-kilter and killing thousands of citizens—including its beloved Guardian—Rho is more surprised than anyone when she is named the House’s new leader. But, a true Cancerian who loves her home fiercely and will protect her people no matter what, Rho accepts.

Then, when more Houses fall victim to freak weather catastrophes, Rho starts seeing a pattern in the stars. She suspects Ophiuchus—the exiled 13th Guardian of Zodiac legend—has returned to exact his revenge across the Galaxy. Now Rho—along with Hysan Dax, a young envoy from House Libra, and Mathias, her guide and a member of her Royal Guard—must travel through the Zodiac to warn the other Guardians.

But who will believe anything this young novice says? Whom can Rho trust in a universe defined by differences? And how can she convince twelve worlds to unite as one Zodiac?

My thoughts

This book makes me sad. Not because it’s about some sad story or what not. But because of how awful it is 😦

I know I have so much to say, but I can’t be bothered anymore. Read it, don’t read it, I just don’t care anymore. And it’s the saddest thing one could ever feel about a book.

But I don’t want to sound unreasonable here. Like. I know I have to at least base this DNFing thing onto some reasons, right? Alright, I’ll do my best here and list the things that made me say “Enough!”:

1. The world was too confusing!!! It was way too confusing for me! At the beginning, the author seemed to just throw descriptions about random stuff the existence of which aren’t even established in the first place! I know, I know, this is prolly my legal mind talking. I welcome intricate worlds, they’re interesting. But the way it’s done here isn’t just for me.

2. I felt no connection to the characters. The first think I always look forward when reading is the connection I am going to have with the characters. Feeling their pains, sharing their happiness, getting giddy over their love lives, and all those stuff. But in Zodiac, nah. I didn’t even care what happens to all of them 😦 And it’s just a sad sad thing.

3. Annoying main character. The main character here is Rho and she’s a bit off for me since the beginning. There are just some little things that she does which she shouldn’t be doing through out the story. One of my super annoyed status while at 34% was

“So you’re being attacked by the most powerful enemy the whole of the universe could ever have and you’re thinking about how your heart bounces all over your rib cage when Mathias is around. Please, Rho. I’ve expected more from you. They were freaking being attacked and she’s supposed to lead as the head of their Cancerian clan and SHE’S FREAKIN THINKING ABOUT THE ADVISER SHE’S HAVING A CRUSH ON?!? I MEAN, COME ON.

So yeah. That’s my little rant about Zodiac. Don’t let this review stop you from reading it. It’s just my personal take on it and it might work for you, y’know. And it you’re only starting to read it, I wish you all the luck in the world. You’re going to need it 🙂
